Summit Re was founded on four main principles:

  1. Practice consistent and fair underwriting which will produce a profit for our reinsurer and balance sheet stability for our customers.
  2. Deliver benchmark customer service at efficient expense levels.
  3. Offer value-added medical management programs to complement those of our clients, particularly in high cost areas such as organ transplants, traumas and low birth-weight babies.
  4. Provide products and services to assist customers desiring to expand into other fully insured PPO/point-of-service/out-of-area programs, employer stop loss programs, and ancillary product lines.

I invite you to view the various products and services we offer to accomplish these objectives. Our vision is to be the leader in medical catastrophic risk transfer. To accomplish this, we need to design and implement customized solutions to satisfy your risk management needs.

Focus on the customer. Summit Re was established on the belief that satisfying our clients' needs will deliver the results we need, both in terms of growth and profitability. Our customer service is based on the simple principle of the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." This means returning calls promptly, addressing concerns in a friendly and fair manner and keeping promises that are made. If you take care of the customer, the rest will take care of itself. We set standards for each process interaction with our customers. Then we monitor and report back on how we've done on these standards we've set.

As a managing underwriter in our tenth year of operation, we work to meet customer needs while satisfying the profit requirements of our insurers and reinsurers that support us. Although you have to spend time and balance the needs of all stakeholders, everyone remembers that it's the customer that pays the bills.

Broad perspective and details are both important. We chose the name Summit Re for a number of reasons. Fort Wayne, where we are headquartered, is nicknamed the Summit City because it's the high point of the 1849 Wabash and Erie Canal, which formerly ran between Toledo, Ohio and Terre Haute, Indiana. The dictionary defines "summit" in two ways: "the highest level or degree that can be attained, or a meeting of high level leaders to shape a program of action." This website and our marketing brochure are designed around the theme of perspective. You'll recall the old saying, "You can't see the forest for the trees." It's important to have the big picture but also to take care of the details. Here, the managed healthcare and catastrophic medical excess marketplace is the forest, the individual clients are the trees, and your specific coverage issues and needs are the leaves.

Focusing on the big picture and each detail are proven keys for success. The details don't always take care of themselves. This is true in arranging reinsurance or planning a wedding.
